Research - Narrative Theory- Ms Hawkins
Narrative Theory
The definition of the narrative theory is that there is a twist in the plot of the film. This technique allows a challenge amongst the audience due to their expectations as well giving the movie a unique layout rather than the typical genre that is expected.
Todorovs Theory
Tzvetan Todorov simplified the idea of narrative theory whilst also allowing a more complex interpretation of film texts with his theory of Equilibrium and Disequilibrium
Vladimir Propp's Vladimir Propp, a Russian critic, active in the 1920’s, published his Morphology of the Folk Tale in 1928. While the Soviet cinema was producing excellent films, Propp was essentially interested in the narrative of folk tales. He noticed. Folk tales were similar in many areas. They were about the same basic struggles and they appeared to have stock characters. He identified a theory about characters and actions as narrative functions.
My Narrative
In my opinion I believe that Todorov's theory would be the best narrative for my thriller opening. This is because it leaves the audience guessing which causes audience concentration on the film and maintain the audience engagment through. However Todorovs theory might create confusion amongst the audience which might cause them to give up on the film because of its confusion. one of the factors why i will not be using propps theory is that because it is to commonly used, and the techniques he uses does not go with the thriller genre. My narrative uses the theme of mystery and murder when a innocent female character is home alone and killed by the mystery antagonist.

Some initial ideas here which shows basic research into narrative theory.
ReplyDeleteTo improve;
-discuss Todorov's theory in more detail. What does the theory of desequallibrium mean?
-Provide examples of Propps characters. Relate this to thrillers.
-when relating to your narrative, discuss the equallibrium, and when the disequallibrium occurs so you relate it to Todorov's theory better
-You also discuss your use of themes, relate to the work of Aristotle here
