Narrative ideas - Ms H

Narrative ideas - Ms H

Group member ideas:

Kemal's narrative idea
  • A woman hears a strange noise coming from a room in a house she just moved in to, and she see's a rocking chair rocking back and forth but it's self. and she gradually walks closer and closer to it, then it shows the front of the chair with no one sitting on it with the woman behind it, then it shows a point of view shot of her walking up to the chair but theres a hand on the arm rest. she gets closer and closer then the person on the chair jumps out, and the door shuts and locks.
  • Advantage- This is a conventional thriller idea and has the potential to be a successful clip. We can make this clip like no other.
  • Disadvantage- There wont be a lot going on in the scene, it will just be a very quick thrill and will not create that much of a tension amongst the audience.

Bryan's idea: A girl hears a noise down stairs she goes down stairs and then realizes the source is coming from the front if the house she walks out side to the end of the garden but a killer gets into the house when she leaves it. he then hides and she walks in. she goes up stairs and it says'your going to die' in the mirror she goes to bed really scared and the killer is under her bed.

  • Advantage- Typical narrative of someone getting killed so the audience can identify the genre. It is easily followed and the audience wont get lost or confused with the narrative.
  • Disadvantage- A killer coming into the victim's house is too predictable, and it is seen to much in thriller films..

My narrative idea:
A stalker follows an innocent woman down an alley way then kills and rapes her, the editing was going to be the key factor in making this idea a good thriller scene.

Final group narrative:

My groups final narrative is going to be a woman is followed home from the trains station coming back from work, and on her way he takes pictures of her, she thinks she is being followed at times but does not see anything, she gets home not thinking anything of it. The stalker has followed her all the way to her house. The atmosphere changes as soon as the door slams and the stalker who is also a killer and gets inside the womans house. Many abnormal things happen in the house which then results in the woman becoming vulnerable to the antagonist. the victim then becomes very scared and feels she is grave danger, she tries to escape from the house but all doors are locked and windows will not open. The Antagonist then reveals himself to the victim with a knife and chases her but not for long until he catches her and kills her leaving her hand on a window covered in blood slowly sliding down, leaving a red handprint on the window.

Planning - Editing Planning - Ms B

Planning: Editing Planning - Ms B

Editing is one of the vital aspects in the process of film production. In general, editing is done to provide coherence and continuity to a film. Editing is the part of post production of film making. The person who does editing is known as the editor. Good editing can make bad production look good and bad editing can turn a good production into bad. Through editing, shots are combined in accordance with the script to create finished movie. A shot must be short enough to fulfill the purpose.  Some of the conventional uses of editing in thrillers are slow motion, slow paced editing, & fast paced editing. These types of editing are used especially in Thrillers to create tension. Slow motion along with slow paced editing are used to build the scene up and emphasizes which creates suspense. On the other hand, fast paced editing is mainly used to create adrenaline and is used when something big is happening.

Some of the conventional uses of editing in thrillers are:
Fast paced editing
fast paced editing is where a load of clips are shown really fastly which will create suspense amongst the audience.
Slow paced editing
Slow pace editing is when clips are put together at a slower pace and this is to create suspense. Slow pace editing is used so the audience can follow the plot of the thriller but it is also used to signal that something is going to happen.
Montage editing
is the speed of editing, where shots are quickly just posed together to create excitement.
180 rule
imagine a hypothetcal line drawn between two or more actors. the camera must not shoot on the other side of the line and this is because it can confuse the audience and also the shooting will not be consistent.
Conclusion
By knowing all of these different types of different editing skills it will help me and my group make our thriller trailer more effective, and also create a thrill amongst the audience.

Planning: Character Representation- Ms H

Planning: Character Representation

The aim of a characters representation is to give the audience a idea of the films narrative by how the person in the role is expressed. the character representation can also build relationships between the audience and the characters. this is a very good concept because our antagonist will need to make the audience feel sorry for and also see the need to panic if something bad is going to happen to her.

we firstly have our antagonist who is Bryan
our antagonist will be represented as a 19 year old who has dropped out of school in a young age and also someone who is unemployed with plenty of time in his hand. we first experience bryan stalking Tanya (protagonist) in the background not so clear. Bryan starts all this because of his hate towards the world and his mum abandoning him at a young age has just put him in this state from a young age.

This has been the ideal background on my character because we need him to become this aggresive character that has had a lot of pain and wants to make the world live the same pain. we will make our character dress in black because he needs to be shown with dull colours which is the representation of him being evil.

Then we have our protagonist who is Tanya
Tanya will be known as a girl that is in the middle of her studies and who is aspiring to go to uni. she is a girl to herself and trys the best in life to achieve. Both her parents have successful workers which is often meant that she will be left at home alone. which all these factors conclude to her walking home for the last time after being stalked by a black dressed character (antagonist: bryan). My character representation for my protagonist is planned to be bright colours which represents innocence.

Conclusion

i have learnt that looking at how i need to represent my character has helped me decide on how my character will look. we have analysed in our group on how we want our character to be represented and how our characters should look in ever prospective. our character will enable the audience to realise what is going on and what the character should be representing.

Planning - Creating own storyboard - Ms B

Planning - Creating own storyboard- Ms Begum

before we started filming we used our knowledge on what a storyboard is and what it is and why and what it helps with. we knew that a storyboard will give us a rough idea on how our thriller film will look so we set to create our own story board. the story board helped us on a number of things such as the organiseation of the group and also what camera angles we will need to take.

frame 1 to 4

frame 5 to 8

frame 9 to 12

frame 13 to 16

conclusion
creating a story board helped me and my group in many ways such as knowing how to take shots and being organised on what we are going to do and how we want that to happen. these all was the knowledge from before on our iconography knowledge and also on how a storyboard looks and what it is used for.

Pre Production Paperwork - Ms B

Pre Production Paperwork

A location reece form allows us to find where we are filming as a group and also helps us find our way to the filming area accurately. it gives accurate directions from our school where every member of our group is familiar with which will guide them easily.
The client release form is very important, it is a agreement amongst the people that participate that they will be at a certain location at a certain time agreed so there will be no exception for people not turning up. this will make everything more rapid and organised in our production group but must of all the best quality we can produce.

The production schedule is used to let the members that are taking part know when and where they will be shooting specific shots. Contact numbers are also used on the form for any problems or inquiries the cast have. It states whom is in charge of directing, editing, camera work, so that the cast know who they need to talk to. Production schedule is important as the cast need to know when and where they are filming as well as who is responsible for certain roles for any problems they may have.

The location release for is a document that shows we are legally taking footage and the right to be filming. the production members will take all responsibility to if there is any inflict or damage cause upon the usage of the area. Also this form allows to give a specific time and location where our filming events will take place.

The risk assesement is the summary showing the problems that could occur in the scene off filming. we will do this to make sure that all people acting and involved in the filming is safe while filming. This is important paper work as the safety of our team is vital

Planning: Production Roles- Ms H

Planning: Production Roles

we will have several roles within our group

Location Manager
As a group we decided that Bryan should be our location manager as he has a very good idea/knowledge on enfield and he has very good knowledge on where could be a good place to take our conventional thriller

Camera operator
In my thriller i will be the camera operator because i feel that i will be the best person to work with the camera in our group. In addition as well as having  steady hand with the camera, i am aware of how the camera works and is able to get into different angles capture movement order to create an effective scene as i have a good knowlede of cinematography causing myself to have the best eye for the job.

Storyboard organiser
As a group we have decided that all of us should participate to create our storyboard as we believe that everyones idea should be contributed. by all of us contributing we will create a brainstorm and condense all our idea's into one story board that we are all happy with going by. so all our thoughts on how the thriller should be and the costumes of the character should be all of our contributions and displayed onto our storyboard as we all agree.
Sound technician
in our group we have decided that kemal will be dealing with sound operating because we feel as a group that he has the best knowledge on what sound should be used where and also he knows how to create a scary atmosphere with sound and create tension amongst the audience. Kemal is also familiar with the software to create soundtracks.

Opening Credits - Ms H

Opening credits

opening credits are shown at the beginning of a show and list the most important members of the production. They are usually shown as text superimposed on a blank screen or static pictures, or sometimes on top of action in the show. Some opening credits are built around animation or production.

The purpose for opening credit is that it shows/points out the important people that are included in creating the film or production. it allows to spend a moment allowing the audience to know who created what feature of the film and also who ever played a part in the film.

As well as showing/telling the audience who was involved in the production of the film, the opening credits is the beginning of the film which it gives some sort of background to the start of the film and a thrill to the audience. while showing the important names there is animations going on in the background, for example in the film se7en the opening credits have a man doing awkward things in the background such as knitting on a piece of paper and also cutting up pieces of paper that does not make sense which creates a thrill and tension amongst the audience.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEq-4fua3lM

All of the actions within the sequence (book pages turning, making tea, drawings), are in a dull colour tonality. This is a plot giveaway to the audience; that the film is dark, and makes it seem more chilling, as the images used are quite provoking. Especially as he crosses out the eyes on the photograph of a little boy. The actions within the sequence become increasingly sinister looking, as only a pair of dirty hands are shown performing them. These hands imply to the audience that they belong to an odd, and most likely central character to the film; so the audience already feels like they understand this character, without being shown his face, or knowing his name. The actions are not shown in chronological order, and often 'double vision', and flicker across each other; however, the actions seem to focus around making something. All these factors just create confusion amongst the audience and fear in what is going to happen in the film.

Typography

In traditional typography, text is composed to create a readable, coherent, and visually satisfying whole that works invisibly, without the awareness of the reader. Even distribution with a minimum of distractions and anomalies are aimed at producing clarity and transparency.

As we could see this is one type of typography where dark blue font has been used and the font has been placed in the centre of the screen. We also have a plain black background which makes the writing stand out.

Research - Narrative Theory- Ms Hawkins

Narrative Theory

The definition of the narrative theory is that there is a twist in the plot of the film. This technique allows a challenge amongst the audience due to their expectations as well giving the movie a unique layout rather than the typical genre that is expected.

Todorovs Theory

Tzvetan Todorov simplified the idea of narrative theory whilst also allowing a more complex interpretation of film texts with his theory of Equilibrium and Disequilibrium

Vladimir Propp's  Vladimir Propp, a Russian critic, active in the 1920s, published his Morphology of the Folk Tale in 1928. While the Soviet cinema was producing excellent films, Propp was essentially interested in the narrative of folk tales. He noticed. Folk tales were similar in many areas. They were about the same basic struggles and they appeared to have stock characters. He identified a theory about characters and actions as narrative functions.

My Narrative

In my opinion I believe that Todorov's theory would be the best narrative for my thriller opening. This is because it leaves the audience guessing which causes audience concentration on the film and maintain the audience engagment through. However Todorovs theory might create confusion amongst the audience which might cause them to give up on the film because of its confusion. one of the factors why i will not be using propps theory is that because it is to commonly used, and the techniques he uses does not go with the thriller genre. My narrative uses the theme of mystery and murder when a innocent female character is home alone and killed by the mystery antagonist.

iconography - Miss H

What is mise en scene?

The arrangement of everything that appears in the framing – actors, lighting, decor, props, costume. It is the way that all these factors are put into one frame that will deter what kind of genre is going to take place.

Example:
By taking an example such as this we take a look at the character, we could see that she looks vulnerable and worried. Then we take a look at the lighting, the lighting is mostly based on her and linking it back to her costume we could see that the lighting makes her white top stand out more. We could also see the décor in this picture, it is mostly colours such as red and brown, And finally we have the props which are the most obvious one which is a gun.

What response does the mise en scene create for the audience?

All the factors that create mise en scene deter the audience’s thoughts on each character and what scene is about to take place, but most of all the genre the film will be. Like the décor such as the bed covers which are covered in red and brown which may create a thought in the audiences head that there may be death involved. And the most obvious prop on this picture is the gun which will make the audience jump and think different about the whole situation in the film.

From this task i found out the importance of mise en scene and what affects it has on the audience. for exaple being able to spot what each itemrepresents and what message it is there to send to the audience.

Research Questionaire - Miss G

Research Questionaire

Intro
For this task i will ask people a number of questions which will allow me to find out a rough idea on what my thriller should be like, and what i should target in order to make it effective.

the questions i asked in my questionaire were:

what is your gener?: Male OR Female

What is your age group?: (12-15), (16-18) OR (18+)

How many times a week do you watch thrillers?: (0), (1), (2) OR (3+)

What makes a thriller apeal to you?: Challenging story line, Intresting Title OR Surprising twists

How do you think a good thriller should open?: Flashbacks, Everyday life, Chase OR Confusion

How important are props and costumes in a thriller for you?: very important, important, fairly important OR unimportant

What builds up suspense in a thriller film?: Chase scene, Music, Flash back OR Flash forward

How much of a plot do you think should be revealed? Some plots, Most plots OR None of the plots

What thriller genre are you most drawn too?: Phycological, Action, Horror, Crime, Mystery
OR Other (if so please state __________)

What makes the most significant difference in a thriller? Lighting, Sound, Character OR Setting

Conclusion

After my questionaires had been done i concluded that the age group that watches thriller films was between 16-18. This age group usually watches thriller films arund twice a week and there favriote thrille rgenre was mystery. People in this age group said that a thriller appeals to them if the thriller had a intrsting titel so i will link this to my thriller in order to keep the audience intrested about my thriller and on the edge of there seats. people mostly said everyday life in a thriller is the best because it creates more suspence as the film goes on. Also people mentioned that props are important in order to keep the audience engeded. Lastly i found out that majority of perope think that sound is the most significant feature of a thriller.
This task helped me with having a clear idea in what i need to include in my thriller and what is should roughly look like.

M.E.S Costume - Miss H

How is costumes used to represent characters

Costume is one of the main features in what or how the character is represented in a film. For example the colour white (or very light colours) represents innocence and a sign of the character being a protagonist. As for the opposite colour black (or very dark colours) is shown as the complete opposite, it shows a sign of evilness and shows a sign of the character being an antagonist.

In film genres we always have the typical antagonist characters and the typical protagonist characters. On typical antagonist character is “the joker” in the film batman.

As we could see the antagonist which is the joker is wearing very dull colours such as purple and dark green, by just seeing this character immediately we get the impression that this character will be the antagonist in the film genre.

And then we have the typical protagonist character such as “James bond” who plays In the films 007. As we could see he is wearing a white tuxedo which is a bright colour which will get the suggestion amongst the audience that he is a protagonist.

Then in some occasions we have characters that are ready to  fight, both characters will be wearing different types type of clothing, one will have very light colours and the other will have dark coloured clothing. Again there is representation on the antagonist and protagonist in what they are wearing and what response it should give the audience.

As we could see in this picture we have our protagonist who is wearing white shirt and lighter coloured clothing than the other characters. The antagonists are wearing all black that just suggests that they are playing the antagonist role.

in this clip by just taking a look at it I could see that that the protagonist is the one that is wearing white and the antagonist is the one that is wearing dark green. There colour of clothes help me infer a lot about the character.

M.E.S Body Lnguage -Miss H

M.E.S - Body language

The way a character walks, talks, stands is what determines the body language of a character. The body language of the character can tell you a lot in the film, the way the character acts will show the audience what type of a character he/she is, this is conventional to any type of film that is in presentation because every character always he something to tell through their body language.

Example of a picture that represents body language & facial expression:

As we could see in this picture there are several factors that show what type of character this person will be represented as. For example by taking how he is standing we could say that he looks quite confident, also we see this the way he holds his gun, it is quiet firm and like he has held one before so he knows how it is used. Also we see his face expression, we see that he knows what he meant to do and he has no intension from changing what he is thinking.

There are a few features that show is the character is a protagonist:

·         Heroic

·         Brave

·         Standing tall

·         Confident

·         Muscular

·         Posture- no fear, prepared

There are also features that show if the character is an antagonist:

·         awkward

·         Confident- in a different way to a protagonist

·         Ability to kill

·         No smiling

·         Lonely

What my character is going to be like in my thriller (antagonist)

In my thriller my character will be represented much more differently than a character in a romance film, in a thriller the characters body language and facial expression will be more firm and a cold hearted look as for in a romance film it will be the complete opposite, because the concept in both films are different, in one film it is on the base line of love and joy, but the other it is about fear and not knowing what is going to happen.

We also get a different representation from characters that are represented in a action film,. The action film characters body language is always upright, looks confident and looks very supreme in the way they are. They also have a different type of facial expression which is straight and appears to the audience as quiet serious.

All of these representations of the characters are messages to the audience, in what they are expected to see from the character and how they should be portrayed throughout the film.

Types of facial expressions you will expect to see from:

Antagonist: straight face, hard looking, serious

Female victim: scared, worried, helpless

Child:  innocent, confused, worried

Character representations

The character representation on the character “Blade” is very bold in this clip. He is shown as a very serious, hard to defeat and confident character amongst the audience. In the start of the clip blade’s facial expression seems to be very confident in what he is going to do because he feels he could achieve it, but as the clip goes on we see signs of him being worried, features such as sweating show this.

In this clip we find all characters body language all happy and joyful, and there facial; expression supporting this statement, but as the clip goes on and scream starts to speak on the phone moods of all antagonist change into a worried body language and facial expression.
