How is costumes used to represent characters
Costume is one of the main features in what or how the character is represented in a film. For example the colour white (or very light colours) represents innocence and a sign of the character being a protagonist. As for the opposite colour black (or very dark colours) is shown as the complete opposite, it shows a sign of evilness and shows a sign of the character being an antagonist.
In film genres we always have the typical antagonist characters and the typical protagonist characters. On typical antagonist character is “the joker” in the film batman.

As we could see the antagonist which is the joker is wearing
very dull colours such as purple and dark green, by just seeing this character
immediately we get the impression that this character will be the antagonist in
the film genre.
And then we have the typical protagonist
character such as “James bond” who plays In the films 007. As we could see he
is wearing a white tuxedo which is a bright colour which will get the
suggestion amongst the audience that he is a protagonist.
Then in some occasions we have characters
that are ready to fight, both characters
will be wearing different types type of clothing, one will have very light
colours and the other will have dark coloured clothing. Again there is
representation on the antagonist and protagonist in what they are wearing and
what response it should give the audience.
As
we could see in this picture we have our protagonist who is wearing white shirt and lighter coloured clothing
than the other characters. The antagonists are wearing all black that just
suggests that they are playing the antagonist role.
in this clip by
just taking a look at it I could see that that the protagonist is the one that
is wearing white and the antagonist is the one that is wearing dark green. There
colour of clothes help me infer a lot about the character.

Berkay, you've selected some good examples here to discuss the differences in costumes, focusing in detail on the importance of colour and what an audience can infer from the colours.
ReplyDeleteDevelop your discussion with further evaluation of how costume is used to create meaning and responses. What do these costumes suggest about specific characters? For example, do certain costumes represent the character as vulnerable, violent, innocent and why?
Include a conclusion about ideas you now have from conducting research about costumes that will be appropriate for your own trailer and why. ( SHH)
